CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Angeal Hewley
AGE: 22/23? Something like that.
CANON: Final Fantasy VII - Crisis Core

CANON HISTORY: Wiki here.
CANON PERSONALITY:

Angeal Hewley is an idealist. He believes in honor, in dreams, in heroism, and he strives to live up to them, in all things and at all times. Even as a child, when poverty brought him to stealing dumbapples from around his native village of Banora, he tried to adhere to that honor, not stealing from his best friend - and not asking for help of said best friend, even though the latter can afford it. Even years later, he refers to it as honor being a burden, which, despite his relatively light tone, suggests that it was a bad time overall. With all the way he reveres what he has left from his stepfather (including the Buster Sword, which his stepfather forged) and the respect he has for his mother (he writes to her regularly enough and feels betrayed later), his memories of his childhood seem to be good, with the only caveat that he had to grow up far too young.

When he joined ShinRa's SOLDIER program, volunteering along with his best friend Genesis, his life changes, yet some things did not change all that much, either. His expectations of himself rose, as the range of what he could do expanded, and so did his expectations of those around him. His friendship with Genesis and Sephiroth grew to matter a lot to him - and he took up to showing his maturity there as well, working as a balance between Sephiroth's fame and Genesis's fire whenever he could. At all times, he stayed aware of what the dynamic around him was and tried to improve it, for the benefit of all involved. Unlike Genesis's resentment, Angeal took Sephiroth's prowess as something to account for and develop, improve with, since they are all on the same side. The three of them made SOLDIER First Class together, and their bond was and remains intense.

As a mentor, Angeal keeps aware of the strengths and weaknesses of Zack, making him thoughtful, if not always gentle. He tries to give all the information that is necessary, though it is sometimes in enigmatic stories that make Zack frustrated - especially considering that Angeal tends to the nearly didactic often enough. His lectures are also 'famous,' according to Sephiroth, as he has also been on the receiving end of those. Even considering all that, Angeal has a sense of humor, sharp and complicated but demonstrating his affections clearly. He also keeps a clear head regarding Zack even at a time of distress, making sure that Zack's career - and his dreams - can continue, despite current troubles.

All in all, Angeal tries to live up to his words, improving himself and improving those around him, solid, stable, and reliable.

It all breaks down with the revelation of the kind of things the company he has pledged his loyalty to is doing, doubled with the one that he is not even, technically, human. With so much of what he knows, of what he has taught, turning out to be a lie, he crashes hard. He sinks into despair, believing he does not deserve to live. His mother's suicide with shame, once she knows that he has learned about her involvement, does not help matters. His dreams lie broken at his feet, honor that he worked so hard to build was always an illusion, and Angeal is lost.

He attempts to rally himself, declaring war on what causes suffering, as that is the one thing he can come up with which is lofty enough to replace his previous ideals, pure enough to be worth doing, and yet hard enough to justify his part in it, with all that he can do and all that he has done. But the more he learns about the situation, about his best friend's degradation and what is expected of him, the less Angeal believes he can make any difference for the better. He can see the damage done with parts of him clearly enough. In the end, he proclaims himself that which causes suffering and thus in need of elimination.

Angeal has many strengths, including loyalty, dedication, dependability, ability to motivate and inspire, attentiveness, protectiveness, understanding, thoughtfulness. But they are also offset by how far he goes in his idealism, and how fragile his self-worth turns out to be, in the end.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:
  • Combat

    • Angeal Hewley is a SOLDIER First Class, and he's earned that by hard work. He is in very good shape, keeps on improving himself at all times, and fights with focus, determination, and wits. His favored weapon is a sword, and he can use well both a standard issue SOLDIER sword, and the much heavier and bigger Buster Sword which he is the original owner of.

  • Jenova cells / MAKO enhancement

    • Angeal is born of a mother infused with JENOVA cells, and, as such, his strength, endurance, and reflexes are augmented. Furthermore, as part of the SOLDIER program, he's been exposed to MAKO treatments, which further enhance him physically.

The successful outcome of Project G (though not the successful outcome of Project Jenova), Angeal is in extremely good physical condition, has regenerative abilities. His cells can offer some aid to Genesis's degradation, though not necessarily stop it, they can be used to make copies of Angeal who take on his appearance and, eventually, personality, and he can also take in attributes and the appearance of creatures he is in contact with.

With two wings - a large and a smaller one - on his right side, Angeal can also fly. It's arguable that the wings can manifest and be retracted at will.

The next abilities are highly probable, considering his position in SOLDIER and what is seen of the world of FFVII, but he is not shown using them 'on-screen.'

  • Materia/Materia Fusion

    • Materia allows equipping various magical abilities, both combat and support (such as healing). These can be taken on, removed, traded, found, created, and Fused to make up new kinds.

  • Summons

    • Genesis and Zack both display this ability of summoning overpowering creatures to combat enemies. As SOLDIER of the same class as them, Angeal is likely to be able to do the same.

  • Limit Break

    • Playable characters in both VII and Crisis Core are able to perform these greater feats than their usual combat abilities. It is unknown what Angeal's would be, it is just likely that he has one/some of those, as well.

    CHARACTER: AU SECTION
    AU NAME: Andrew Gillian Hughes
    AU AGE: 31
    PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES:
Almost a decade older, though that brings very few physical changes to him as he's kept himself in a very good shape.
    No wings.
Eyes a normal blue color, rather than mako-enhanced vivid blue.

    AU HISTORY:
    * Born in a town near Recolle.
    * Grew up with his mother and stepfather. His father was impulsive and of poor constitution, so he couldn't keep jobs and they were poor. His father always would tinker and make things, though, like toys when he was little. His father was also a man of ideals and always tried to keep to his honor, even when it had negative effects.
    * Due to the poverty, Andrew did some things that were not exactly legal, like stealing fruit / vegetables, though always careful where from and to not cause trouble for the actual owners.
    * Went to the military to rise above the circumstances.
    * Air force (honorably discharged). He quit after finding some things done that he could not reconcile with his ideals of the military being covered up by the officers. Tried to change things with his resignation, but doesn't have access level to know if it worked.
    * Was NCO and good at it.
    * Met Zack Fair during their time in the military.
    * Currently working as a bouncer, nights, and looking for education options - he has completed high school and all military trainings, but he wants something more useful away from the army.

    AU PERSONALITY:
Unlike in canon, Andrew's 'cold shower' regarding what he has dedicated himself to doesn't render him suicidal. Instead, it makes him reexamine his actions and do better, be better, with less pride in things that may turn out to be false and more focus on things that need doing and doing them right.

Andrew is trying to cut down on the amount of lecturing he gives others, though it's not quite working out yet. He still holds on to his ideals, the ones instilled on him by his stepfather, and though he's gotten disappointed by how much he can uphold under all circumstances, he can't give them up, or give up on trying to instill them on people who matter to him.

For the most part, the difference with his canon personality is that he's trying to move forward, rather than crash and burn; trying to be more chill. He's found things out that are pretty bad, hasn't been able to fix them, and his lofty ideals have not mattered at all in the face of that, so he's trying to learn to live with the awareness that they're not everything. It's not easy, but he's working on it.
