Character
Name: Angeal Hewley
Age: 22? 23? Tops.
Gender: Male.
Canon: Final Fantasy VII - Crisis Core
Canon Point: At death's point, after he comes back to normal appearance post Penance.
History: Angeal's Wiki.
Personality:
For all the nearly two decades of his life, Angeal has been building himself up to be an honorable, worthy person, one who knows how things are and what needs to be done and, when necessary, does it. He has been part of a war for years on end, starting in his teens, and that has left him somewhat damaged, but he is still reliable, a good friend and mentor, with awareness of right and wrong and a sense of humor.
This all breaks when he learns the truth about the project that resulted in his existence and some of its consequences, watches his mother take her own life upon finding out that he knows, and both gets to experience the changes - deviations from human - that his body undergoes and is helpless to help his childhood friend, part of the same experiment but not as successful. In short order, Angeal's ideas of himself shatter, and he is left reeling and alone. The destruction of what his personality was is very thorough, to the point where his story ends in suicide by Zack.
The personality described in this section is as close an approximation as can be made, based on his actions and the brief glimpses we get of him near the end; on the other hand, he has surrendered a lot of his self-respect to get to his final point, so he will likely be attempting to re-establish himself, at least in his head, and the result from that point forward may not be quite what he used to be.
Even so, the impression that Angeal gives is of a strong, stern, implacable, reliable, knowledgeable fighter. All of these are true, to some extent, but there is also hollowness and fragility underneath. Part of that is his youth, too - he has been a soldier, as well a SOLDIER, for a long time, but he started very young and is currently in his early twenties. Another part is not knowing how to rely and be guided by others (entirely different from taking orders), as used as he is to others relying and being guided by him. The other side of what is lurking beneath the impression he gives off is his sense of humor, as well as his loyalty to those he cares for and their dreams.
Which leads to two of his positive traits, which are that he is dedicated and loyal. This is a statement that may seem odd, considering that what we see is Angeal practically abandoning Zack. But that is point of view narration (which becomes more complete as the story progresses), and what we do have to support this is:
He followed Genesis to join ShinRa when Genesis wanted to meet and work his hero, Sephiroth.
He fought a war for years for the company he committed to.
He followed Genesis, again, when Genesis deflected, though Angeal himself did not betray ShinRa - supported by supplementary materials, but also by the fact that he could rejoin the defense of the HQ later.
In the end, he couldn't go face Genesis with the idea to destroy him. (He does face Zack - with the intent to lose. Which is its own flavor of terrible.)
It is exactly his loyalty and dedication that lead to how broken he is, because those he has been loyal to betray him, in one way or another - his mother, by what she has done and by abandoning him when she takes her life; Genesis when he turns against innocents and when he helps Hollander take cells from Angeal to make monsters; and ShinRa for the kind of experiments it makes of humans in the first place. Zack is the exception, and Angeal tries to give the best of himself to him, both times when he leaves - recommending him for a 1st Class when he is about do go follow Genesis, and leaving him the Buster Sword when he is dying.
Two of Angeal's negative traits, on the other hand, are that he's hard-headed and fragile. It is nearly impossible to turn him aside from a course of action once he is set on it - and those around him are fully aware of it. He doesn't choose quickly or lightly, but when he does, he commits. Even when something happens that should affect his course of action - for the better - he keeps on going all the same. (An example is when Zack refuses to fight him after Angeal's claim that angels dream of being human. A new perspective is offer to him, and he discards it.) His fragility is shown in the way he tries to struggle alone, to find a reason to keep going, but eventually caves in on himself. He doesn't come out stronger on the other side. He gives up. (Coming in to game, he'd be aware of having done that, and might try to work on that.)
Two of his neutral traits - ones that can be both positive and negative, depending on circumstances and dosage - are that he is idealistic (his ideals, such as dream and honor, can be a source of strength for him; but they can be used against him, too - and their tarnishing is ... an extreme weakness) and that he is the kind who thinks and analyzes the information he has. Under normal circumstances, the latter is a strength - he is not quick to act, but when he does, he is aware of what he is up against. (Demonstrated in the analyses he gives Zack, and in the flashback scene with Sephiroth and Genesis.) At other times, it can lead to over-thinking and getting trapped in his own head, which circles back to the stubbornness/hard-headedness.
As partially mentioned above, the major events of his life left him broken and wanting to end his existence. He grew up with ideals of dreams and honor and heroism - but he also grew up poor enough that he sometimes stole apples to have something to eat. Part of his growing up - his teens, in particular - was in the conditions of war, a war that he was fighting on the front lines of, going above and beyond the expectations placed on him. Another breaking factor is finding out about the experiments that he and Genesis are, that he is the 'success' but he is powerless all the same - he can't help Genesis's degradation, he can't stop monsters being made out of him. The latter few make his entire world come crashing down around him. Eventually, he loses (as far as he knows) his childhood friend, which severs his last connection to wanting to live. Wanting his life to end is the extreme symptom of the damage; the many mistakes that he should have been able to see in his thought process and actions are more symptoms.
Angeal's motivations throughout his life were dreams and honor. Sometimes, they were another's dreams (Sephorth, the child general, was Genesis's dream), but he made sure that he dreamed his own, as well. When those dreams and that honor were no longer available to him, as a monster cannot aspire to them, he grasped for another motivation - a war on suffering. In the end, he considered himself an enemy in that war, but he did remain true to that idea to the end.
How Angeal would react to a negative situation very much depends on the circumstances. Angeal is a fighter, but he is not one to mindlessly respond to something with violence. He tries to analyze the situation first, to learn as much as can be known - such as the strengths and weaknesses and motivations of both friends and foes - and continues to evaluate conditions as they change, his focus very much on what he is doing. On the other hand, there are negative situations which are not nearly as neatly solved as a fight, and those he copes with... less well. Still, tries to learn and think, first, in such situations, as well.
